👩⚖️ What TV Lawyers Get Wrong About Real Law

Spoiler alert: real life legal work involves fewer dramatic objections and a lot more paperwork.
If you’ve ever watched a legal drama and thought, “Wow, being a lawyer looks intense!” — you’re not wrong… but you’re not exactly right, either.
At SHG Law, we love a binge-worthy courtroom scene as much as anyone. But we also love setting the record straight. So here it is — a behind-the-scenes peek at what TV usually gets wrong about the legal world we actually work in (and what we secretly wish was true).
🎬 1. Lawyers are always in court, delivering emotional speeches
TV says: Lawyers are basically full-time courtroom gladiators, fighting for justice with mic-drop monologues and wild cross-examinations.
Reality: Most legal work happens outside the courtroom. Wills, LPAs, property matters, estate planning — they’re about preparation, paperwork, and precision. Less drama, more detail.
That said, we do love a good speech… just usually in client meetings over coffee, not in front of a judge.
🧠 2. Legal issues are resolved in an hour (with ad breaks)
TV says: One problem, one episode. Boom — case closed.
Reality: Real life legal processes take time. There's gathering information, liaising with third parties, registration, compliance — and, of course, keeping everything accurate and up to date.
It’s more marathon than sprint, and our job is to make the journey as smooth and stress-free as possible for you.
💃 3. Lawyers wear glamorous heels and designer suits every day
TV says: Every lawyer looks runway-ready at all times, even during late-night case prep.
Reality: We do love a good power suit (hi, pink SHG blazer 👋), but comfort wins on admin days. Also, real-life lawyers are rarely walking dramatically through courtrooms in heels — especially not in the rain.
📁 4. Legal assistants can dig up any document in 2 seconds
TV says: “Find me everything they’ve ever written, emailed, or texted — now!”
Reality: We work with systems and processes to keep your legal documents safe, secure, and accessible — but it takes organisation, not movie magic.
Good legal work is thoughtful, thorough, and often behind the scenes. Less hacking into secret files, more meticulous document checking and client care.
🧾 5. Wills and LPAs are barely mentioned — until it’s too late
TV says: Characters only talk about wills or powers of attorney after something’s gone wrong. Cue the dramatic reading of a surprise will…
Reality: In real life, planning ahead is the best way to avoid legal messes. A well-written will or LPA can prevent family stress, confusion, and disputes — no plot twist required.
At SHG Law, we want to normalise these conversations before they become urgent.
🎥 Final Verdict?
TV gets the drama right — but in real life, being a lawyer is more about people than plot twists. We help clients make sense of important decisions, navigate legal documents, and protect what matters most — with empathy, clarity, and (sometimes) coffee.
