Accidents happen — but when they result in injury due to someone else’s negligence, you may be entitled to compensation. At SHG Law, we believe it’s vital that you understand what qualifies as a personal injury and how you can seek justice.

What is a Personal Injury?

A personal injury is any physical or psychological harm caused by the negligence, recklessness, or intentional act of another person or organisation. This includes:

  • Accidents at work (e.g. slips, trips, or unsafe working conditions)

  • Road traffic accidents (car, motorcycle, cyclist or pedestrian injuries)

  • Accidents in public places (shops, pavements, parks, etc.)

  • Medical negligence (misdiagnosis, surgical errors, etc.)

  • Injuries caused by defective products

  • Criminal injuries (where you're injured during a crime)

If the accident wasn't your fault, or if you were only partly to blame, you could still make a claim.

When Can You Make a Claim?

You can typically make a claim if:

  • The injury occurred within the last three years

  • The accident was caused wholly or partly by someone else

  • You suffered measurable harm (physical or psychological)

There are exceptions for children and those lacking mental capacity, so it's always worth getting legal advice, even if you're unsure.

Why Make a Personal Injury Claim?

A claim isn’t just about money — it’s about justice, accountability, and support during recovery. Compensation can help with:

  • Lost earnings

  • Medical expenses

  • Ongoing care and rehabilitation

  • Travel costs

  • Emotional distress
