💬 Advice We’d Give Our Younger Selves (That Involves a Will!)

We all look back on our younger years and think, “If only I knew then what I know now…”

Maybe we would’ve saved more, travelled more, worried less — or at the very least, avoided that questionable fringe in 2009. But here’s something most of us never thought about in our 20s or 30s: making a will.

Yes, it sounds a bit serious. Maybe even morbid. But trust us — Future You will thank you for sorting it out early.

So here’s what we at SHG Law would tell our younger selves, and maybe what you need to hear today too:

📝 1. "Wills aren’t just for the wealthy or the elderly."

You don’t need a sprawling estate or grey hairs to need a will. If you own anything of value — a car, a property, savings, even a pet — it matters where it goes.

A will ensures it goes to the people (or causes) you care about. And if you’ve got kids? Even more reason to have your say.

💼 2. "Adulting isn’t just bills and laundry — it’s protecting what matters."

There’s something empowering about saying: “This is mine, and I get to decide what happens to it.”

Making a will can help avoid confusion, disputes, or delays at a really emotional time.

👯‍♀️ 3. "People change, so keep your will updated."

Your 20s and 30s are a rollercoaster. Relationships begin and end, you might buy a home, have children, get married, or go through a divorce.

A will should grow with you — it’s not a one-time job. Future You might be dealing with more than your student overdraft, so build the habit now.

🐾 4. "Who gets the dog isn’t as obvious as you think."

You might assume your partner, flatmate, or parents would know what to do with your beloved pet — but legally, it’s not automatic. Without a will, your furry friend could end up in limbo.

(And yes, we’re more than happy to write pet provisions into your will. We’re animal lovers too.)

❤️ 5. "Talking about death doesn’t have to be depressing."

We’ve all been there — someone brings up wills at dinner and the mood immediately dips. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Planning for the future can be light, even empowering. At SHG Law, we keep it straight-talking, judgement-free, and even kind of fun.

💬 Our advice?

Do it before you think you need to.

Because when it comes to wills, “too early” is better than “too late.”
